Oncology Day Unit Wexford General Hospital

Contract value: €2.8M. Main Contractor: David Flynn Construction. Architect: O'Connell Mahon Architects. Client: HSE South. Project was completed in 2010.

I was the Project Architect on this project from concept stage right through to completion of the contract on site. The project was completed while maintaining existing live wards adjacent to and above the site, it comprises a single storey extension connected to the existing main Hospital building at ground floor level, providing an Oncology Day Care clinic including a 10 bay treatment recovery area, an isolation room, reception area with waiting, consultants rooms and offices, with a new access road and car park. The Clinic is connected to the main hospital but operates as a separate unit with a dedicated entrance.

The unit is cut into the side of a slope, and the form of the building is dominated by a sawtooth window arrangement which creates individual patient bays within the large open treatment area.
